CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Montgomery County Republican Women’s Club honored outgoing state Rep. Curtis Johnson at their monthly meeting Tuesday at Tanglewood House. Johnson talked to the group about his legislative career following his decision late last year not to seek reelection in November.
Several other local Republican leaders were in attendance, including state Rep. Jeff Burkhart (District 75) and County Mayor Wes Golden. Also attending were Republican House candidates Jamie Dean Peltz and Aron Maberry, who are running for the District 67 seat and Johnson’s District 68 seat, respectively.
Johnson’s speech highlighted the accomplishments of Tennessee’s Legislature including avoiding a state income tax, numerous tax cuts, and getting state funding for the planned Tennessee Wings of Liberty Museum.
After his speech, Johnson was honored as a longtime friend of the Republican Women’s Club, especially for how he “quietly promoted women and their efforts, supporting their voice and their place in the legislative process.”
Johnson expressed confidence in Maberry’s abilities should he succeed him as a representative, saying that he keeps up to date and knows what Tennessee needs. Maberry said he respected Johnson and his advice, saying, “He was one of the first phone calls I made when I decided to run, and I met with him before I ran to get his advice and see what his plans were back then.”
The Montgomery County Republican Women’s Club meets in Tanglewood House on the first Tuesday of every month.
