CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Donelson Christian Academy Lady Wildcats traveled to North Second Street for a matchup with the Lady Cougars on Monday. The Lady Wildcats took an early lead and maintained it throughout the contest. Despite a comeback effort from Academy, DCA took a 65-43 district win on the road.

The Lady Wildcats went on an 8-0 run to start the contest, but Clarksville Academy quickly battled back to make the first quarter a fun back-and-forth contest. Guard Mia Johnson took over in the first half, scoring 10 points, all inside, and finishing with 16. That was the mantra for the Wildcats: nothing flashy, just inside buckets, not even free throws in the first half. In fact, they didn’t hit a three until the closing seconds of the second quarter to take a 31-22 lead into the half.

The Cougars cut the lead to eight headed into the fourth, led by the scoring effort of guard Sicilly Robinson, who ended the night tied for leading all scorers with 18. Unfortunately, there seemed to be a lid on the rim in the fourth quarter, and even when they got a basket to fall, DCA always had an answer.

“They capitalized every time we made a mistake, credit to them,” said Cougars head coach Charles Clark. “There were things in the offensive game we could’ve executed better, but there’s a point in the game where you just have to square up and make the shots you practice, and we didn’t. When you mix that with a lot of turnovers, that’s not a winning formula.”

DCA ran away with the fourth quarter, ironically enough this time with a flurry of threes, four of them in the fourth quarter. Wildcat Guard Kayla Varpness ended the night as their leading scorer with 18 points, and DCA picked up a much-needed win to climb the standings in Division II-A Middle District. As for the Cougars, they have no time to hang their heads, with two more district games on Wednesday and Thursday to decide their postseason seeding next week.

“It’s not a good time to have our heads down,” said Clark. “We have to be in the right mindset, and understand that we have a lot of important ball to play. We wipe this one from the mind starting tomorrow.”
