CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – At a recent meeting of the Montgomery County Commission, teen Alexis Mihalinec was presented with a proclamation naming November 2014 “Help the Homeless” month in Montgomery County.
The proclamation, signed by County Mayor Jim Durrett, encourages citizens to join 16 year old Alexis in “efforts to raise awareness and support our local food pantries by contributing food to help feed the hungry and homeless in Clarksville, Montgomery County.”
The document states the teen’s desire to help the homeless in addition to her various acts of service in the community.
Alexis is a Rossview High School student with a 3.6 GPA and is the Founder/President of S.T.E.P.S. (School Tools that Empower and promote Success), an organization that helps low income families with school supplies. Since she began the organization four years ago, it has raised over $16,800. She is the current Miss Clarksville Teen Tennessee and will be running for Miss Tennessee Teen USA with a platform of homeless children and families along with military men and women that become homeless due to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Alexis has also volunteered for four years for Manna Café Ministries collecting food and supplies for the homeless. She was given the Governor’s Volunteer Stars Award in 2012 for her work.
In the proclamation, Durrett said Alexis “leads by example, with a heart for serving others in her community and her volunteer spirit and generosity serve as an inspiration to us all.”
