CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- (CLARKSVILLENOW) Northwest High School’s Athletic Department is pleased to announce the appointment of several new coaches for the NWHS Athletic Programs.
Cheerleading: David Owen has been selected to serve as the head coach of the Viking Cheer program. David began coaching gymnastics and tumbling classes at the age of 16. Since then he has been involved in many facets of gymnastics and cheer, both as a participant and a coach. He has also been a personal trainer, group fitness instructor, and yoga instructor for the last 6 years and is excited to bring that knowledge into the sports environment at Northwest High School. He shared that his “goal is not only to be an effective and efficient coach, but also to promote qualities such as self-love, responsibility, and leadership among the athletes of Northwest.”
Boys Golf: Ben Smitherman has been selected as the new Boys Golf coach, replacing Terry Ray, who is retiring from teaching at the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year. Ben has coached 15 years and 34 seasons of a variety of sports at Northwest, including cross country, track and field, and wrestling. He shared that “while winning region and state championships is always the goal, developing young people into quality adults is the ultimate measure of success. As a former Viking student athlete, myself, I love the opportunity to pay it forward and grow our athletes. The boy’s golf team has a tremendous potential for growth, and I see the sport as a great forum for teaching important life skills such as integrity and dedication.”
