CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Northeast Eagles hosted the Northwest Vikings for an inner-city matchup and senior night for Northeast. The two teams traded blows back and forth, but the Vikings scored down the stretch, securing a 50-44 win.
The two teams struggled offensively early on, mostly due to good defensive rotations from both squads. Every time one team went on a run, the other responded quickly, and the two teams were deadlocked at 21 going into the half.
“We emphasized to them to be more disciplined on the defensive end,” said Northwest head coach Thomas Stanley. “Stay down, and don’t gamble as much. We just needed to be sound and simple, not make it more complicated than it is, and we did that tonight.”
The lead exchanged hands multiple times in the second half, until Northwest lead 47-44 with 30 seconds remaining. Northeast had a few chances but couldn’t seem to find the bottom of the net. Jaquez Scott, who led all scorers with 14, iced the game with free throws, and Northwest earned its first win since January 8th.
“We battled, and we played a solid game all around,” said Northeast head coach Ivard Brimley. “Now our focus is on the 18th, where we get a third shot at Rossview and it’s a 0-0 record at that point in the play in.”
With Northwest’s latest victory, it’s a win that can help them gain momentum, as they’ll face West Creek in the District 14-4A play in game, where the loser will have their season came to an end.
“Our district is the wild, wild west,” Stanley told Clarksville Now. “Two years ago, Dickson (County) finished last, then won the district tournament. Anybody can beat anybody in our league, and we’re ready.”
