CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Northwest High junior guard TaCarey Monday has been named Clarksville Now Player of the Week for his play during his team’s postseason run.

The Vikings began their week by playing Kenwood for third place in their district tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

This was their second matchup of the season. In their first game, Northwest defeated Kenwood 60-43. While it was a close contest, the result stayed the same. Northwest defeated Kenwood 48-40.

Monday scored 24 points against the Knights, which accounted for 50% of his team’s total. He also finished the game with 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks.

After defeating Kenwood, Northwest faced Northeast in the opening round of the regional tournament. The two teams split the season series, so it’s no surprise that it was a tight contest.

When it was all said and done, the Vikings topped the Eagles 54-47. Monday once again stepped up to lead his team to victory. He dropped 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.

The junior guard finished the week with his team winning two playoff games and averaging 23.5 points per game.

“I feel like I played good last week,” said Monday. “We played as a team, and we were coached up throughout each game. My teammates really opened up for the floor for me so I could find ways to score the ball. Since they were playoff games, that motivated me even more.”

Coaches corner

“TaCarey is very important to this team,” said Northwest Head Coach Thomas Stanley. “He does a good job of leading by example, while trying to become a more vocal leader. He’ll be important for our program’s future as we try to build off of this season and the positive things that we did accomplish.

“Our goal is to keep trying to grow and do better, so that the Northwest Vikings boys’ basketball program can do more next season. On the court, TaCarey is extremely competitive, and he just loves the game,” said Stanley.

“What I’ve been impressed with is the fact that if there isn’t something he’s doing well, I normally only have to tell him once. Then, he comes out and does a nice job of fixing those issues. He tells me he’s listening, and he has proved that. One thing I learned from this past week is he is going to show up in big games. Even if his shots aren’t falling, he’s going to try to impact the game in different ways. He’s always going to compete, and I know he’s not going to back down.”

The Northwest High boys’ basketball season came to an end after playing Dickson County in the second round of their regional tournament. Nevertheless, the Vikings are eager to pick up where they left off.

Honorable mention

Several other players had great weeks on the basketball court. Here are two that merit special mention:

  • West Creek freshmen guard Kameron Bowers scored a career-high, 30 points, in the quarterfinals of their regional tournament vs Dickson County.
  • Rossview junior forward Jacob Edwards averaged 11.5 points and 6 rebounds through two postseason games.
