HOPKINSVILLE, KY (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Northeast High Eagles traveled to the Stadium of Champions in Hopkinsville for the season opener against the Christian County Colonels. The Eagles consistently outmatched the Colonels, winning 48-20 in an offensive showcase.

Christian County struck first, with receiver Zyon Wharton catching a strike from quarterback Tom Johnson on the Colonels’ first drive. Northeast responded quickly, however, as they scored on their next three offensive possessions, including two touchdowns from running back Jahfari Roberts, to make it 20-7 Eagles at the half.

“We came out slow, and they came out with looks that we weren’t prepared for, so hats off to them,” Eagles head coach Deonte Weston told Clarksville Now. “Once we got adjusted and established that run game, we picked it up quickly. If we start faster, I really like how we looked once we got going.”

The second half was a scoring fest for both squads, with Northeast adding four more touchdowns from Terry Jones, Deston Jones, Jacob Briggs and Jonas Veasy to extend their lead. The Colonels got two more touchdowns of their own on the board, but it wasn’t enough to come back from the large deficit, and Northeast earned a big win in week one.

“We’re young and we’re inexpierenced,” said Christian County head coach Ethan Atchley. “We can’t get too high or too low in this game, and that’s something they will learn with experience. We play with a lot of emotion, which is good; we just have to learn to control it. We’re excited to continue to grow with more games and more reps.”

As for Northeast, it’s a win that means a lot to the program, because it marks their first victory during a season opener since 2022. Next, the Eagles turn right around to face their heated rival, West Creek, who’s looking to bounce back after their season-opening loss.

“As a coach, I’m always going to be hard on them, but going 1-0 this week is huge,” said Weston. “We’re back to 0-0 next week, and it’s a huge rivalry game that those kids are going to be amped up for. We have to clean up a lot of things, tackling specifically, before we can go and win that game next week. Just getting the win and the confidence that comes with it, it’s great for these kids and this program.”
