CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Maplewood High Panthers visited Exit 1 for a showdown with the Northeast Eagles in the second week of high school football scrimmages. While the Eagles started out slow, their offense caught fire and showcased their prowess with only two weeks till week one of the regular season.
Clarksville Now caught up with Northeast High head coach Deonte Weston before the scrimmage to get an idea on what he wanted to see from his Eagles squad against the Panthers.
“We’re trying to gauge where we are as a team, that’s our biggest thing,” Weston said. “Defensively, we’re trying to learn the details of a new scheme. Ultimately, it’s about flying around, making plays and having fun.”
Maplewood scored the first points of the scrimmage, but the Eagles in turn ripped off five straight touchdown drives, showcasing their aerial assault throughout. While Weston was impressed, the slow start is something they want to fix.
“Starting slow against really good teams can be the difference between winning and losing,” Weston said. “It takes a lot to come back, but I like how we responded tonight. This is a very young team, but we kept our composure. I liked what I saw tonight.”
