CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Northeast head coach Deonte Weston said he scheduled Friday’s matchup against Mt. Juliet because the Golden Bears are a physical team that could prepare the Eagles for region play. That praise became reality as Mt. Juliet handed Northeast its fourth loss of the season, 34-12.

Weston admitted the Eagles (2-4) didn’t play their best football on Friday night, but he remembered why this game was scheduled before four straight region matchups.

“We really just got to get better at the small things: alignment and assignment, tackling, doing our job. We really didn’t have a really good week of practice, and I figured that was really going to bite us against this really good Mount Juliet team,” he told Clarksville Now.

“The good thing is, that loss doesn’t mean nothing to our season. It is a loss that will get us better as we move on to region play.”

The Eagles’ defense was outmatched early, giving up 20 points in the first quarter. Mt. Juliet’s three first-quarter rushing touchdowns set the tone for the attack it would feature all night. Northeast was simply unable to climb out of the early hole as the Golden Bears continued to operate on the ground.

Northeast’s game changing decision, what’s next

Weston also had a decision to make heading into the game after backup Amizaye Sanchez led the Eagles to a win against Lawson in Week 5. He elected to stick with Kayden Davis as the starting quarterback, and Davis threw for two touchdowns with two interceptions in his return to action.

Now, the Eagles will look to shake off a disappointing result against Mt. Juliet as they face an even tougher foe. Northeast will travel to play region opponent Henry County in search of its first region victory of the season.

“I believe we can go there and play with those guys. We just got to believe. We got to believe we can win. We’re very talented. We just haven’t put it together in all three phases of the game, especially on special teams.”
