Norman Dwight McWhorter, age 71, of Clarksville, passed away Monday, December 13, 2021, at Walking Horse Meadows.
Dwight was born August 12, 1950, to the late Norman Francis McWhorter and Mary Lometa Biter McWhorter. He was known as “Smiley” throughout his school years. Dwight is a 1968 graduate of Clarksville High School. He later attained his Masters Degree in Business Administration from Austin Peay State University, where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi and Alpha Tau Omega. In his early years, he played baseball with the Junior League as a pitcher, earning his team, The Legions, several wins. He also played basketball with the varsity league at Clarksville High. In the 1980s, Dwight continued his love of sports as an assistant coach. During this time, he gained his love of golf. He played with several friends, including his Uncle Denzil. Once in a while, he would let his wife, Shirley, play 18 holes, but didn’t allow gimmies.
Mr. McWhorter spent his career as an accountant working different businesses, including banks, hotels, a chicken farm, and doing taxes for several places. He retired from the Frist Center in Nashville in the accounting department.
Dwight is a member of First Baptist Church of Clarksville and was previously a member of Gracey Avenue Baptist Church.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, December 19, at 2:00 PM, at the Chapel of Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home, with Rev. Pat Van Dyke officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, December 18, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, and Sunday, December 19, from 1:00 PM until the hour of service, at the funeral home.
Dwight is survived by his wife, Shirley Hubbard McWhorter; son, Chad (Tiffany) McWhorter; daughter, Charlsie (Tarpon) Wiseman; stepchildren, Debra (Mark) Tschida, Linda (Jeff) Hunt, Scott Hubbard, and Tim (Amy) Hubbard; sister, Debbie McWhorter Smith; grandchildren, Rex Wiseman, Russ Wiseman, Grace Anne McWhorter, Seamus McWhorter; several step-grandchildren and great grandchildren; uncle, Denzil (Linda) Biter; aunts, Elaine Biter Smith and Peggy Biter Lock; niece, Claire Smith (Ryan Greanias); and nephew, Bradley Smith.
In addition to his parents, Dwight was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Rexanne Sleigh McWhorter.
Pallbearers will be Denzil Biter, Marshall Biter, Chad McWhorter, Tarpon Wiseman, Bradley Smith, Ryan Greanias. Honorary pallbearers will be Rex Wiseman and Russ Wiseman.
