DICKSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – Three days after two teens were killed and two others were injured in a Dickson County crash, authorities have released new details.
According to a release, Deputy Sheriff Kevin Salewsky reported observing a car and motorcycle begin drag racing on Highway 46 South early Saturday morning.
Salewsky said the car swerved into the motorcycle’s lane and forced it into the emergency lane.
Authorities said due to the reckless manner to themselves and other citizens on the roadway, Salewsky activated his blue lights.
After Salewsky turned on his blue lights, the Dickson County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the car turned onto Old Highway 46 and was reportedly driving in the middle of the road.
According to a release, Deputy Salewsky could see several people inside the car and felt “it was critical” to stop the driver.
The vehicle stopped briefly before fleeing.
Salewsky reported from a distance he then observed the driver turn down Tidwell Switch Road. Authorities said the deputy lost sight of the vehicle and slowed down about a half mile down Tidwell Switch Road.
As Salewsky continued to the end of the road and went around a sharp curve, the deputy spotted the car crashed and smoking beside a tree. He got out of his patrol car, called for assistance and began rendering aid.
Layton Woodard and William Howard, both 17, were killed in the crash. Layton’s 15-year-old sister was also hurt, and so was the driver.
The crash remains under investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Charges are expected.
