CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (ESPN CLARKSVILLE) For any aspiring athlete, playing the game they love beyond high school would be a dream come true. To be able to come back to your hometown and give back to the community would bring the dream full circle. That’s exactly what Alex Poythress is doing.
The former Northeast High school standout, who later went on to play for the Kentucky Wildcats and is now about to embark on an NBA career, will hold his first camp in Clarksville this month on May 29 and 30 at his alma mater, Northeast High School. For Poythress, this camp will be something participants will remember forever.
“I wanted something for the kids to look forward to heading to the summer. I know when I was younger I had the top gun camps to look forward too, so I always wanted to do my own so kids can really just have something to bring them together before he summer begins,” Poythress said.
There will be two sessions. Session one will be open from 8-11 a.m. for kids K-6th grade and session two is open from 1-4 p.m. for 7th – 12th grade. Youngsters will get the chance to train with some of the best coaches in Clarksville.
“Campers can expect to have fun at this two-day camp and learn the fundamentals of basketball, compete and have fun. We’re going to try to put them in position to succeed. And it’s also going to be a learning process for them to understand the game,” Poythress said.
Poythress will also have some help at his camp with a few names you might recognize, including Terry Boykin who runs Playmaker Basketball, Northeast High school head coach John Stigall, Eric Purvis and Tommy Stanley. Former Austin Peay player Zavion Williams, former Tennessee Lady Vols player Bashaara Graves, and former Austin Peay Lady Govs player Tiasha Gray will be in town to help.
If you’d like to get signed up early, you can go by Northeast High school Saturday May, 20 from 12-2 p.m. The cost of the camp is $70 cash only. For more info, contact alexpoythress.skillscamps@gmail.com.
