CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Music for Mercy Band will take the stage at Beachaven Winery from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 2 to raise money for the Academy for Academic Excellence, a school founded by the late Mercy Yrabedra.
Mercy was a music teacher who graduated from APSU and began a teaching career in the CMCSS School System. She and Charlene Lawlor started AAE 25 years ago to ensure that every student has the opportunities for success that they deserve.
Mercy’s love of children also led her to become very involved in the local efforts of the charity, Camp Rainbow.
The school is a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization that limits its annual enrollment to 72, providing a ratio that allows students the one-on-one instruction they need, and time and attention that is difficult for the public school system to provide. The school’s enrollment is about 60 percent special needs students, and relies heavily on private donations from local businesses and individuals.
Music for Mercy came about two years ago, shortly after Yrabedra passed. Former students started the group in an effort to continue her legacy through music.
Former music student and now music teacher, David Bratcher, has composed and arranged several pieces for a full band which includes a rhythm section, percussion section, horn section and vocalists. Students from AAE, APSU and local musicians will perform songs including jazz and blues standards, to classics by Santana, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan and Chicago.
Tickets are $10.00 in advance and $15.00 at the gate. The show will be in two sets beginning at 2 p.m. There will also be a silent auction featuring items donated by local businesses and individuals.
