JOELTON, Tenn. – A mother and daughter were able to get out of their car safely after it caught fire Monday on Interstate 24 West.
The incident happened near exit 35 at Whites Creek Pike in Joelton around 3 p.m.
The driver, Ambur Nelson, said the car started smoking as she was driving her young daughter to their home in Clarksville.
Nelson pulled the car over to the shoulder and got her daughter out.
By the time she helped her daughter over the guardrail, she could see flames coming from the hood.
“I was okay. I was just trying to calm my daughter down and tell her it was going to be okay,” said Nelson. “But after I calmed her down, I looked over and realized my car was on fire.”
She said she’s just glad they made it out because the situation could’ve been so much worse.
A Metro police officer was first on scene. He grabbed the fire extinguisher from his patrol car but by the time he got close, the front of the car was fully involved.
The Nashville Fire Department arrived a few minutes later and quickly put out the flames.
