CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Looks like that vast majority of locals are in favor of expanding deadly force laws in Tennessee.
A new bill in the Legislature could legalize the use of deadly force in defense of property. Rep. Jay Reedy, R-Erin, told Clarksville Now his bill is largely influenced by gun laws in Texas, which are more permissive. Opponents have argued deadly force isn’t called for in property crimes.
We asked if citizens be able to use deadly force to protect their property, and received over 1,000 responses. Here are the results of the informal online poll:
- 81.3% – Yes, deadly force should be OK for property.
- 16.9% – No, deadly force isn’t OK for property.
- 1.8% – I’m not sure.
