CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – LaTonia Brown has been appointed to the Montgomery County Commission to serve as the representative for District 8 and fulfill the remainder of the term through August 2026.

Brown submitted her letter of interest in the position previously and was among four candidates who spoke to the commission  Monday night on why they should be chosen for the opportunity.

She said she is an Army veteran with over a decade of experience, which includes serving as an OH-58D aircraft repairer and orderly room clerk at Fort Campbell. She has volunteered throughout the Montgomery County community, including through the City of Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department as a baseball and softball coach.

“For me, public service is not just a title — it’s a calling,” Brown said. “It’s a commitment to standing in the gap and being the voice of the unheard. And to turn challenges into opportunities and enhance the lives of residents.”

Brown said the responsibilities she had in the Army directly translate to those of a county commissioner. She said she is interested in becoming a commissioner because of her deep sense of responsibility.

11 votes for Brown

She replaces Tangi Smith, who resigned in February to focus on her family and health. The other three candidates were David Forbes, Brandon Lee Kling and former Commissioner Ronald Sokol.

During the first and only round of voting, 11 members voted for Brown, 6 for Sokol, 3 for Kling and 1 for Forbes.

After the meeting, Brown told Clarksville Now she’s ecstatic for the opportunity and is looking forward to bringing her work ethic, experience in the military and her heart to the commission.
