CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Two Montgomery County attorneys have been convicted of felony extortion after a jury found them guilty of forcing a client to pay them an additional $50,000 for services.
WKRN News 2 confirmed the verdict Tuesday.
Defense attorney Fletcher Long and his colleague, Carrie Gasaway, were indicted last year on one count each of extortion.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) began investigating the pair in February of 2012.
According to a previous release, the victim said she sought legal services from Gasaway in October 2010 to read her father’s will and an initial fee was agreed upon by both parties.
After the will reading, Gasaway requested the victim sign a contract for an additional $50,000.
When the victim refused, the TBI said Long joined Gasaway in making continued demands for the additional payment and later obtained a warrant for her arrest.
The verdict may affect the proceedings in the ongoing Holly Bobo case. Long is the attorney for Jason Autry, one of the men charged with Bobo’s murder. If Long is disbarred for his felony conviction, he would no longer be able to represent Autry.
It is unclear when the pair will be sentenced.
