Clarksville, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The third-seeded Fairview Yellow Jackets traveled to take on the two-seeded Montgomery Central Indians for the first round of the district 11- 3A tournament on Tuesday. The Indians’ offense scored timely runs, and Central’s Addison Jackson pitched a complete game shutout to earn a 2-0 victory.
Montgomery Central got on the board early in the bottom of the first, with Ashlee Phillips driving in a runner with an RBI double. After that, offense was hard to come by for both squads for the following three innings, until Rebecca Fowler hit a deep sac fly into right field, scoring the second runner of the night in the bottom of the fourth.
“We set the tone for the week tonight, the girls had great energy as soon as we started warming up,” said Indians head coach Chris Jackson. “They played hard, and we got the little things done tonight. Our at-bats got better as the game went on, and we got hits when we needed them. Some nights we have to manufacture runs, and we did tonight.”
The Indians’ defense was lights out throughout the game, led by Jackson, who allowed only four hits, 1 walk and struck out 5 batters in seven complete innings. While it wasn’t flashy, the Indians did just enough to earn a huge postseason win, and advance to play Creek Wood tomorrow at their place, with a spot in the district championship on the line.
“Our defense has been very good all year for us,” said Jackson. “They’re a young group, and they played their butts off tonight. The message all year has been you’re playing to extend your season, and that’s what we’re going to try to do tomorrow. If they bring the same energy they did today, I think we’ll be in for a good game.”
