CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW)- Montgomery Central Middle School Junior Civitan Club raised $2,111.20 to assist in educating children of the Maasai Tribe in Kenya, Africa.

These funds helped to purchase 200 desks, exams, and other essential items. The education of young girls in Africa is especially important to the members of the club because they realize that it will help to end childhood marriage and genital mutilation as well as provide young women independent means for economic support. Ms. Vicki Winner, the principal of Montgomery Central Middle School, traveled to Kenya this summer to view the impact the Jr. Civitan Club had made.

Chief Joseph of the Maasai Tribe came to Montgomery Central Middle School on May 14, 2018 to thank the students in person who were so kind to his people. He shared pictures, artifacts, songs, and poems from his culture with the student body. Chief Joseph extended an open invitation to all the children to visit him in his homeland.

In addition to presenting at Montgomery Central Middle School, he stopped for a visit at Northeast Middle School. CDC teacher, Jennifer (MJ) Parrish, taught in Kenya during the summer of 2017 with Chief Joseph and the Maasai tribe and arranged for him to visit and speak to students at North East Middle School. During his stay in Clarksville, he also met with local churches to build relationships to create connections for further mission trips. Several teachers in the CMCSS system are planning a trip for June 2019.
