CUNNINGHAM, TN – It was a special night in Cunningham as Montgomery Central hosted their first-ever Immanuel Gilmore JV County Championships. On Monday night, 123 wrestlers entered the event from all eight Montgomery County programs to compete for podium spots on a night that honored Gilmore, the beloved athlete from the Indians program that was paralyzed from a neck injury during a postseason match last year.
“It was great to see such a close friend who has gone through so much honored the way he was,” said Reese Levendusky, one-time teammate of Gilmore, who attended the event.
The crowd rose to their feet, giving Gimore a standing ovation after the emcee introduced him at the beginning of the event, saying, “We have watched as Immanuel has inspired thousands of people through his bravery, perseverance, and faith. Today we honor him by hosting our first-ever Immanuel Gilmore JV County Championships. Please give this courageous young man a round of applause to show our love and support.”
Gilmore’s mother Nancy then kicked off the event by performing the national anthem.
Competition results
Gilmore’s cousin Jonathan Francis won the 144-pound weight class, but added to his hardware when the coaches voted him the Outstanding Wrestler, making it a storybook night for the wrestler and his family.
The event awarded the top 4 in each of the 14 weight classes. The Indians program claimed eight of the 14 titles, with other champions from Kenwood, Kirkwood, Clarksville, and Northwest.
Winning titles for Montgomery Central were 106 Aden Perkins in an all-Central final over teammate Noah Mayfield, 120 Gavin Holt, 126 Jacob Jolley, 144 Jonathan “Slick” Francis, 175 Connor Diaz, 190 Jace Flake, 215 Zach Nord, and 285 Aiden Buckley.
Kenwood had three champs, as 113 Pedro Benscome, 138 Ahmire Lay, and 150 Azadn Dorsett all won top spots. Clarksville’s Garrett Pavlik won the 132 class; Northwest’s Danny Miller won it at 157; and Kirkwood’s Jaylee Gore won the 165-pound class. All placers:
