CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – After three games played, the Montgomery Central football team has compiled a record of 0-3 in 2023. While the games didn’t end the way Montgomery Central wanted them to, head coach Corey Wright told Clarksville Now he’s seen his student-athletes grow week in and week out, and he trusts his players.

Montgomery Central enters the 2023-24 season after posting a record of 2-8 last year. Wright said that throughout the off-season, he noticed his team progressing.

Wright said their program has a lot of new faces, and part of building up their culture is trying to do everything together.

He said he and his staff have raised their standards and expectations for players this year, which has resulted in losing some team members along the way. Wright told his players this is part of life and dealing with adversity.

With numbers being low for the Indians, underclassmen have received opportunities to step up, and they’ve been up for the challenge, according to Wright. When asked about what position groups have stood out up to this point in the season, the head coach responded by saying the “monstrous” tight end group has impressed and grown into their roles.

Offensive and defensive philosophy

Montgomery Central’s offense will look similar to years past, but Wright said they plan to have a more balanced approach, which includes incorporating more play action passes. He also said their offensive unit had to adjust their scheme due to losing some size from last year’s graduating class.

As for the Indians’ defense, Wright said his players know the scheme and their roles, but it’s all about playing free and downhill for the group. He expects his team to be stingy, which includes taking advantage of opposing offenses and their miscues.

Coming into the season, Montgomery Central spent hours learning how to properly tackle, which is all about protecting players, according to Wright.

What’s next

Each of Montgomery Central’s losses came at the hands of teams who are currently undefeated. That list includes the Clarksville High Wildcats, Kirkwood High Cobras and the White House High Blue Devils.

The Indians now turn their attention to a home game against the Creek Wood Red Hawks, who are also winless to begin the year. According to Max Preps, here is the rest of the 2023 schedule for Montgomery Central.

  • Home against Pearl-Cohn on Sept. 15.
  • Away against Whites Creek on Sept. 22.
  • Away against Fairview on Sept. 29.
  • Away against Marshall County on Oct. 6.
  • Home against Station Camp on Oct. 20.
  • Home against Greenbrier on Oct. 27.
