CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Montgomery Central baseball traveled to Murfreesboro on Monday to take on Central Magnet High. It took 10 innings, but the Indians came away with a 6-5 victory to secure a spot in the regional championship.
The game began as a back and forth battle as each team fought for the advantage. There were a total of four lead changes through the first three innings of play.
Montgomery Central’s offense showcased their ability to get on base by any means necessary. This included four base hits, two walks and a hit by pitch. In addition, the team’s base running played a key part in their ability to score runs.
Central Magnet scored in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game, but after that, offensive production was scarce. Pitching took over the matchup down the stretch.
It was a team effort by Montgomery Central. Aidan Karns and Payton Sanders finished off the game for the team. Karns ate up the majority of innings for the Indians, and ended the game with 6 innings pitched, 8 strikeouts, 1 earned run, 1 hit and 4 walks.
The contest remained scoreless throughout the rest of regulation. This led to the game going into extra innings. The contest was decided after 10 innings of play. Landon Welborn led off with a double in the top of the tenth for Montgomery Central. Hayden Boyd followed up the extra base hit with a single to drive in the game winning run.
Postgame
“The team has worked so hard for this moment,” said Montgomery Central head coach Todd Dunn. “This game had it all. Our lineup made some big hits and my big three senior pitchers combined to win the game. It was an overall team effort, and I am very proud of my players. We have preached ‘eyes, head and heart’ to the team throughout the season, and they had it all tonight.”
The Indians postseason run continues this Wednesday as they compete in the regional championship.
