CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – It’s time once again for the annual Mickey Fisher Memorial Golf Tournament, set for Friday & Saturday, July 10 & 11 at Fort Campbell’s Cole Park Golf Course. The shotgun start of four person teams is at 8 a.m. both days.

The tournament, which began in 2010, creates awareness for fallen soldiers and allows local military families to receive scholarships for their children to attend Austin Peay State University.

Mickey Fisher was a family man and organizers like to keep that quality alive through the tournament. His wife Mary and three sons, Bret, Ryne and Hunter are all involved by helping make this tournament possible and by also playing in memory of their dad.

Mary Fisher talked about the family involvement in the tournament. “The first two years it was probably a little bit hard on us. It’s real important to us because my family, all three boys, come back, one is in Kansas City and two are in Georgia, so that’s neat to have them back,” said Fisher.

Fisher added that it’s really special for us that we’re able to help other kids through people loving Mickey basically. That’s why they play, because they cared about him. It’s not to win it’s just because they cared about him.

Most of Fisher’s life revolved around sports. He played basketball and golf as a student at Clarksville High School and also played basketball at APSU from 1972-76. Fisher then taught and coached in the Fort Campbell School System for 33 years. He died shortly after his retirement in 2009.

“He was just a good guy, he loved golf and he loved junior golf. That was one reason we went with this type of tournament. He worked with military kids and that’s what he did all of his teaching career,” Fisher said.

Each year a new recipient is selected to receive $5,000 annually for four years while attending APSU. The scholarship is renewable annually as long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA and full-time enrollment status.

Along with the tournament a dinner, silent auction, live auction, and the announcement of the scholarship will take place at 6 p.m., Friday, July 10 at the Bud Barn off Exit 19 on I-24.
