CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Parks & Recreation is now accepting applications from junior and senior high school students interested in learning more about the political system on the Mayor’s Youth Council.

The Youth Council invites Clarksville’s teens to work with the Mayor and city officials to represent their peers and learn how the political system works.

Members will represent the community’s youth and directly engage with the Mayor and City officials through the course of the program. In addition, they’ll work with the City of Clarksville Department Heads, Chamber of Commerce, civic clubs and service organizations to provide service and leadership opportunities for the youth of the City.

The most recent Mayor’s Youth Council worked in six distinctive pods that addressed civic issues such as education, civic engagement, environmental concerns, public health, social justice, and food and housing insecurity.

“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic this past year, the Youth Council under Hannah Dodson’s leadership has proven to be a cornerstone organization for our youth to get involved and engaged in the Clarksville community,” Mayor Joe Pitts said. “This Youth Council is a group of dedicated students, and I’ve been proud to see their hard work pay off throughout the year. We want to see the momentum of the current Youth Council continue, so I invite our young people to get involved and apply.”

Youth Council applicants must be in 11th or 12th grade in Clarksville-Montgomery County and have at least a 2.75 GPA. Members meet monthly and take part in a one-year term coinciding with the CMCSS 2021 academic calendar.

Applications are available online until April 15, and must include a 200-300 word essay as well as a reference from a teacher, guidance counselor or principle.
