CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Former New York City Mayor and democratic primary candidate Mike Bloomberg visited Clarksville, Tennessee on Friday, February 28, to hold a campaign rally at Old Glory Distilling Co. The event comes just before Super Tuesday, when Bloomberg will be on the ballot.
Bloomberg was introduced by UT Martin graduate, Lt. Gen. John “Glad” Castellaw, USMC (Ret.). Currently the CEO of Farmspace Systems LLC, a data collection company that makes use of drone-based aviation, Castellaw served 36 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He shared his experience in New York on September 11, 2001 and credited the city’s recovery in part to Mayor Bloomberg, who took office the following year.
Bloomberg spoke to the crowd on several topics, including foreign policy, the job market, guns and the 45th president Donald Trump. In particular, he thanked service members in the crowd and promised to support military both before and after service.
“As Commander in Chief, I promise to never put our fighting men and women into harm’s way unless absolutely necessary, and as President, I promise to ensure that all our veterans have the resources and support they need to succeed in and out of uniform,” said Bloomberg in his speech. “I will work every single day to make sure that this country pays the great debt that we owe them.”
Both supporters and undecided voters showed up to here the former New York Mayor speak.
“I like Mike. I think he is a smart man. He knows people, he knows how to run a government, he knows how to run a business and he knows how to run this country,” said Gene, a supporter from the crowd.
“Election day is coming up next week. I am still undecided so I thought I’d come out and see what Bloomberg has to offer,” said another attendee.
While one group gathered at Old Glory Distilling Co., another group gathered across the street to show their support for President Donald Trump. Supporters gathered around tractors displaying Trump flags and waving handmade signs to show their support for the current president, and lack of support for Bloomberg.
“I am here today to protest Bloomberg. I don’t like his direction and I am a full supporter of Donald Trump. I think Donald Trump is good for our country,” said Tom Lumpkins, a local Trump supporter.
With Super Tuesday only days away, Democratic primary candidates continue the scramble to gather support in participating states. Amy Klobachar held a rally today in Nashville at 4:30. Dr. Jane Sanders, wife to candidate Bernie Sanders, also visited Nashville on Wednesday to campaign in support of her husband.
Polls will be open in Clarksville-Montgomery County on Tuesday, March 3 from 7 a.m-7 p.m. for both The Presidential Preference Primary and County Primary Elections. To view a sample ballot, click here.
