Martha Elizabeth Smith Johnson, 92, of Clarksville, TN, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at her residence.

She was born on July 27, 1921 in Stewart County, TN to the late James Bellfield Smith and Katie Curtis Smith. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Virgie Shemwell; four brothers, Elbert Smith, James Smith, Walter Smith, and Bob Smith; and two grandsons, Brian Johnson and Charlie Mills.

Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014 at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Chapel with Rev. Richard Wesley and Rev. Ben Falls officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation was from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday, May 11, 2014 and from noon until the hour of service Monday, May 12, 2014 at the funeral home.

Martha was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught adult and children’s sunday school classes for many years. She was also a member of the National Letter Carriers Women’s Auxilliary and the PTA. She was raised in the Odd Fellows Home. She was a marvelous cook, loved to read, work crossword puzzles, work in the flower garden, and play piano. She adored her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of over 71 years, Robert B. Johnson of Clarksville, TN; son, R. Wayne (Ann) Johnson of Marceline, MO; daughter, Elizabeth “Betty” (Bobby) Mills of Clarksville, TN; sister, Sally Richardson of Clarksville, TN; seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Bobby Mills, Robbie Mills, Bailey Alley, Scotty Alley, Sean Hill, Rick Mittler, and David Davis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Antioch United Methodist Church, c/o Bobby Mills, 451 Fentress Lane, Clarksville, TN 37040 or the Montgomery County Public Library, 350 Pageant Lane, Suite 501, Clarksville, TN 37040.
