CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee 7th District U.S. Representative, Republican Marsha Blackburn, was in Clarksville Wednesday, August 12 and spent time meeting with community and business leaders as well as constituents. Part of her visit also included a stop to make pizzas at the new Clarksville Domino’s.
Blackburn met with Antonio Murgas, a Domino’s franchise owner who has four stores in Clarksville, along with his team at Domino’s on 3863 Trenton Road. Blackburn was joined by Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett who also took some time to make a pizza.
Blackburn spoke about her visit which is associated with the Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act, a bill being co-sponsored by her in the U.S. House which will ease the nutrition labeling requirements for small business owners, including Domino’s in Clarksville.
“We have had testimony on it and we are very concerned about the impact it will have on small businesses and small restaurants. It is very difficult to determine when you’ve got something like pizzas, how do you go through and figure out exactly what the calorie count would be,” said Blackburn.
In an email, Domino’s spokesperson, Ashley Coneff, said Domino’s has been providing this information to customers for over 14 years. By allowing Domino’s to post online, it’s reaching the vast majority of customers and giving them accurate and precise information at the time they’re placing an order.
By posting the information online it’s estimated that small business owners like Murgas are saving about $5,000, per store, per year, which is the cost to maintain menu boards at their locations.
Murgas and his staff took Blackburn and their guests through the steps from rolling out the dough, adding the toppings, and baking the pizza. Blackburn said one of the most interesting things to her was how each of the ingredients were measured out to pull together the combinations that you want.
Along with Blackburn was her local Field Representative, Bo Patten, and Mayor Durrett was joined by Montgomery County Chief of Staff Jeff Truitt, who each also took a turn at the pizza making process.
