CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW.COM) – A Clarksville man is facing charges after police were called to a reported domestic assault that resulted in a standoff on Gomer Road Sunday night.
According to a warrant, Rene Ramirez, a female victim, and their 9-month-old child were driving to a Gomer Road address when Ramirez allegedly choked and assaulted the female victim.
The warrant said the attack continued when they arrived at the residence. The female victim and Ramirez’s mother, who was at the residence, were both choked and assaulted.
When Ramirez saw a patrol car pull up to the house, he grabbed the baby and a knife and locked himself in a bathroom. He refused to come out for almost an hour. The baby was not harmed.
However, during the standoff, officers said they heard the baby fall at least four times. He could be heard screaming and crying throughout the ordeal.
Ramirez told police he had cut himself with the knife and said he felt like passing out due to loss of blood, but would still not come out or release the infant.
He eventually surrendered the baby to crisis negotiators and exited the bathroom after about 56 minutes.
Ramirez is charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment, interfering with an emergency call and child abuse and neglect. His bond was set at $230,000.
