CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office would like to congratulate Lieutenant Cliff Smith on his retirement after 45 years of public service.

Smith started working for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in 1974 as an Undercover Narcotics Investigator. Since then he has worked as a Jail Deputy, Patrol Deputy, and Investigator.

In 1988, he was promoted to Criminal Investigations Sergeant. In 2011, he was promoted to Criminal Investigations Lieutenant. In 2012, he transferred to Patrol and in 2014 transferred to the School Resource Division.

He established the Bomb Squad in 1981 and served as its Commander for 31 years. He also served as a U.S. Marshals Special Deputy from 2003-2014.

Smith received eight letters of commendation and was recognized as Criminal Investigator of the Year during his service. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

During his retirement celebration, Sheriff Fuson presented Smith with his retirement badge, service weapon, plaque, coin, and flag flown in his honor. Mayor Durrett read a Proclamation recognizing Smith for his service to Montgomery County.
