CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Country Womans Club has received a much-needed new roof thanks to the efforts of Cynthia Pitts, first lady of Clarksville, and several local builders.
The clubhouse at 2216 Old Russellville Pike is a well-preserved craftsman-style log building that was constructed in 1927. The Country Womans Club has kept a lot of its original architectural and historical features, but time has taken its toll, and the roof has been in need of serious repair for a while.
When the club celebrated its 100th year anniversary in September, Pitts found out about the need repairs.
“She had said, ‘Are y’all doing well financially?’ And I said, ‘Not really,'” said Joy Wall, president of the Country Womans Club. “She had said that this would be such a good project. So, she contacted her son, Jacob Crass, and these other gentlemen.”
Construction started Thursday morning, with three companies banding together to do the repairs.
Crass, ABC Supply branch manager, said the building had a bad leak. “I called Best Choice Roofing, and they wanted to step up and help, too. Manufacterer Owens Corning, ABC and Best Choice Roofing came together to step up and provide this roof and labor,” Crass said.
Part of the problem is that over the years, multiple layers of roofing had been put on the building.
“Any time you have multiple layers on a roof, it’s susceptible to aging and deteriorating faster than having one layer put on properly,” said Eli West, general manager of Best Choice Roofing.
“We’re so grateful,” said Gail Black, a member of the Country Womans Club. “They’re here doing this for free for us when we needed it.”
The club has monthly meetings, special speakers and activities. For more information, you can find them on Facebook at Country Women’s Club in Clarksville, TN.
