CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Volunteers with the Tennessee River Chapter of the American Red Cross are heading to Columbia, South Carolina to support disaster relief operations for those affected by Hurricane Florence.
Angela McLaughlin and Joey Monroe left Tuesday afternoon in their Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) from the Red Cross office on Madison St. in Clarksville. They will work with other volunteers to distribute emergency supplies and will also be involved in feeding operations throughout the affected disaster area.
This is Monroe’s ninth deployment to work with disaster services and he said he will probably be doing damage assessment.
“I’ll start off as an Emergency Response Vehicle driver, and then once I get there I’ll go wherever they need me. I’m looking to do some sheltering because this is my first deployment,” McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin said organization can always use more volunteers. He said now is the time to contact the Red Cross office and see what they can do to prepare and help.
Philip Barletto, Disaster Program Manager, said the Red Cross anticipates a lot of people are going to be interested in volunteering because of Hurricane Florence. They are offering an entry level volunteer class between 9 a.m. and noon, Saturday, September 15 at the Red Cross office, 1760 Madison St. For more information call 931-645-6401 or visit the local Red Cross website.
