MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Women Elevated, a local group focused on eliminating homelessness among female veterans, was recently invited to Washington to visit the White House and speak with the current administration. They discussed concerns surrounding the Veterans Administration as well as resources the administration has that could advance the group’s mission.

Women Elevated met in the White House War Room on Wednesday, November 13, to discuss Women Elevated’s mission to eradicate homelessness among women veterans in Middle Tennessee and the country at large.

The group met with individuals including Jennifer Korn (Office of Public Liaison), Alex F. Flemister (Deputy Associate Director of Public Liaison) and Giovanna Coia (Press Secretary, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs). These individuals work closely with the President in connecting with public concerns.

Women Elevated is a local organization focused on helping women who have fallen through the public radar, many of whom come from middle to upper class backgrounds who were at risk in their homes and might otherwise not qualify for assistance.

According to Women Elevated, there are approximately 742 homeless veterans in Tennessee. The organization helps by providing transitional housing to women in need. They would like to expand their activities to provide long-term housing, vocational training and other programs focused on the reduction of prison recidivism rates for veterans. They would also like to open more programs for male veterans.

Montgomery County Commissioner Tangi C. Smith, founder of Women Elevated, shared the group’s slogan: “‘There is no I in WE.’ It takes a village to solve our nation’s problems.”
