WASHINGTON, D.C. – Leaders from Montgomery and Christian counties are in Washington, D.C. to discuss the fate of Fort Campbell.

Citizens for Fort Campbell typically take a yearly trip to the capital to lobby for projects for Fort Campbell, but this year’s trip is different.

Representatives, including those from the Chamber of Commerce and Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett, will speak to senior officials about the upcoming listening session at Fort Campbell in an effort to make a stand for the post.

The session will be held Jan. 20 at Fort Campbell’s Family Resource Center. The public is invited to attend.

During the session, leaders will address the Army’s reorganization of its force structure to meet the requirements set by the Budget Control Act of 2011. The Army plans to reduce end strength by 40,000 to 70,000 soldiers by the end of Fiscal Year 2017, for a 450,000 troop level with 32 active component brigade combat teams.

“I think every community leader should be there. I think everybody that owns a business should be there, and I think all of our average citizens that work for local businesses should be there because ultimately if we lose 48 percent of the troops that are out there right now it will affect every single person in Clarksville and Montgomery County,” Durrett said.
