CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Members of Clarksville Indivisible held an impeachment demonstration on Tuesday, December 17, outside the office of Congressman Mark Green in downtown Clarksville.
The event came one day before the U.S. House of Representatives vote on two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, in which Congressman Green will have a vote.
Approximately 30 people attended the demonstration, which lasted two hours. Demonstrators waved signs, sang songs and spoke with people on the street.
Several individuals from the group spoke with Green’s office manager, who took their contact information and promised to relay their message to the congressman. Both sides agreed the exchange was cordial and that such demonstrations are a welcome expression of free speech.
Members of the group called both Congressman Green and Senator Marsha Blackburn, who would take part in any Senate proceedings following today’s vote, leaving voicemails encouraging them to ‘do the right thing.”
“I visited with [Green] about another issue a few years ago,” said one of the demonstrators.” I just think that the kind of person he wants to be, and the kind of American that he wants to be, believes in the rule of law and would want to hold the president accountable.”
The house will vote today on two articles of impeachment, the first of which charges President Donal Trump with abuse of power for allegedly seeking to pressure Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky into assisting his reelection by publicly announcing investigations into Hunter Biden and Burisma, a Ukranian company of which Hunter Biden was a board member.
The second article charges the president with obstruction of Congress. This article is related to the president and his office’s refusal to turn over documents and allow testimony that was subpoenaed by Congressional committees.
“This is important because there is nothing more important to our democracy than the Constitution and the rule of law, and this president is trampling all over both,” said Christine McKinney, a member of Clarksville Indivisible and the Montgomery County Democratic Party. “He needs to be held accountable.”
