CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – If you have not been to a Turkey Shoot before, you are in luck. There are two opportunities coming up this weekend to participate in a good old-fashioned Turkey Shoot, and it’s all for a good cause.
The Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Department is hosting their 22nd annual Turkey Shoot the next two weekends to help raise funds for the Woodlawn Fire Department. The Cunningham Volunteer Fire Department is also hosting their Turkey Shoot fundraiser this Saturday as well.
In case you do not know, a turkey shoot is a fun target-shooting contest where participants try to get the best shot on paper-turkey targets with shotguns. Turkey shoot winners receive whole turkeys and hams as prizes each round for the best shot on target.
The Woodlawn Fire Department’s Turkey Shoot will be held at the Woodlawn Fire Department the next two Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the next two Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Department is located at 2274 Woodlawn Rd in Woodlawn, Tenn.
The Cunningham Fire Department’s Turkey Shoot will be held beside the Citgo on Highway 48 on Saturday Nov. 9, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Citgo is located at 2035 Hwy 48 by the Ramblewood Apartments in Cunningham, Tenn.
Turkey shoots are a great opportunity to get involved in the community, practice your target shooting and compete for a good cause.
Rodney Grimsley, chief of the Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Department, says the Turkey Shoot is the fire departments main fundraiser and helps support the station activities for the firefighters throughout the year.
“It’s a fun community event,” said Grimsley. “We have people from all over the area come shoot with us every year to help support the fire department and the community.”
Woodlawn resident Jessie Taylor says he has enjoyed participating in the Woodlawn Turkey Shoot every year since 1988.
“I shoot in the Turkey Shoot every year,” said Taylor. “I try to win all my neighbors and everyone on my street a ham or turkey for Thanksgiving Dinner.”
Grimsley emphasizes the turkey shoots are a lot of fun and everybody should come to one at least once.
“It’s a great way to do something fun and for a good cause,” said Grimsley. “Someone is going to win a ham or turkey every round so you have a 1/15 chance every round to come away with a prize.”
The turkey shoot winners receive whole turkeys, country hams and picnic hams. The cost to enter the turkey and picnic ham rounds at the Woodlawn turkey Shoot is $3 and $4 for the country ham round. The turkey round at the Cunningham Fire Department’s turkey shoot will be $4 and the ham round will be $6.
Turkey Shoot participants are asked to bring their own shotguns but ammo will be supplied. Grimsley says if you don’t have a shotgun, there will be some at the Turkey Shoot to borrow, if needed.
