Contributed commentary on the Montgomery County Democratic Party by Karen “KiKi” Jackson.

I would like to share my opinion to ensure that your values and beliefs are represented. It’s essential for us to engage in conversations about our party’s direction and hold our leaders accountable for their decisions. The Democratic Party historically has stood for inclusivity, but it feels as if the focus has shifted away from the core issues that directly affect our communities by only supporting (the LGBTQ community) and abortion. That is why my old motto was, “Vote blue no matter who.”

As seasoned members of the Democratic Party, many of us share a sense of disappointment and even alienation when we see our values not reflected in local policies. Issues such as economic equality, healthcare access, and support for the underprivileged should remain at the forefront of the Democratic agenda. It’s vital to honor the diversity of thought within our party and recognize that support for one community shouldn’t come at the expense of another.

It is crucial for the old guard of the Democratic Party to unite and demand a return to the foundational values that have historically defined us. Let’s not forget our commitment to support everyone in our community, regardless of their background, while ensuring that the issues affecting the elderly, the economically disadvantaged, and other marginalized groups are not overshadowed by supporting only the LGBTQ community.

I urge every veteran Democrat in Montgomery County to be proactive. Attend local meetings, elect new party officers, ask questions, and advocate for candidates who echo our long-held beliefs. Let us rally together, not just as voters but as neighbors with shared experiences and a common goal for a community that reflects the principles of equality and empathy.

In conclusion, it is time to reclaim our narrative and push for a new local Democratic Party that embraces all its members not just their priorities. Together, we can foster a more inclusive atmosphere, one that honors our values and works tirelessly for the collective good of every individual in our community. My new motto is “Vote blue, unless you know who.” I may actually vote for my very first Republican for the right reason.
