CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) – American Legion CSM Gary W. Crisp Post 289, the Clarksville chapter of American Legion – a U.S. organization made up of local posts of wartime veterans – is working to offer new youth programs in Clarksville.
The American Legion was founded in 1919, and since then, has operated under four pillars: veterans affairs and rehabilitation, national security, Americanism, and children and youth.
In its effort to offer new, local youth programs, Post 289 has become more involved with local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. This past October, Post 289 chartered Pack 510 of the Cub Scouts, which meets at Barkers Mill Elementary School. While the pack initially only had four members, it has grown since the beginning of the school year and now has over 40 members.
Post 289 has also founded a new Boy Scout troop, 289, numbered after the post. Troop 289 hails from the Tiny Town Road area of Clarksville and meets at Daymar College on Trenton Road, where American Legion Post 289 meets.
Scott Eldridge, Scoutmaster of Troop 289 and member of American Legion Post 289, said of the new Boy Scout troop, “We are starting small, but have already seen a jump with five new scouts signing up this week.”
The American Legion’s support of the Boy Scouts of America began at the Legion’s first national convention in 1919. Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, American Legion posts sponsor more than 2,500 Scouting units across the country, marking Post 289 as only the latest post in the American Legion to support local Boy Scouts.
