CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – A branch of the Tennessee Sol AAU program recently notched its third AAU Girl’s Basketball State Championship.
The Sol’s 2023 blue group – which features sophomore athletes from Clarksville Academy, Clarksville, Kenwood, Rossview and Henry County high schools – won the last three games of the 2021 Tennessee State Championship Tournament in Knoxville to win the title.
The sophomore team struggled in the first two seeding games of the tournament, dropping both by an average of 23.5 points. Led by former Austin Peay women’s basketball players Lauren Yarbrough and Elizabeth Rates, the team rallied the rest of the way to reach the Division II State Championship bracket.
Clarksville Academy’s Atiya Moss spearheaded the Sol offense in the championship against TN Elite: She scored 19 points, and the Sol defeated the Elite 52-48 in what was a rematch from a day prior.
Moss averaged 13 points throughout the tournament, leading all Clarksville-area players. Kenwood sophomore Iyanna Curtis, Rossview’s Sarah Mayes and Clarksville High’s Ella Muiznieks also saw playing time over the weekend.
Former NBA player Trenton Hassell founded the Tennessee Sol in 2011 and is the head coach at Clarksville Christian School. Rates and Yarbrough additionally serve as assistant coaches under Hassell at CCS.
