CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Volunteers and staff with Loaves & Fishes spent Saturday morning helping to fight hunger in Clarksville-Montgomery County. Close to 20 local agencies and churches who feed those who are hungry stopped by the Loaves & Fishes warehouse to pick up food made available through the organization. Executive Director, Susan Chapman, talked about the effort.
“We are taking our overabundance that’s been donated to us and we are distributing the food out to our agencies that we service. Basically, we know what we need for the year and so anything extra we try to distribute to agencies so they can distribute it to other people,” said Chapman.
The food was collected from donations made to the Loaves & Fishes Jingle Bell Food Drive, the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, as well as individual donations from the public. The APSU Basketball Team, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS), and Tennessee Promise students were some of the volunteers who helped box up the food to be handed out.
Chapman added that Loaves & Fishes distributes food to 42 agencies throughout the year and around 20 of those picked up about 13,000 pounds of food on Saturday. Some of those organizations picking up food included the Austin Peay Food Pantry, Old Firehouse Day Shelter & Room in the Inn, SafeHouse, Salvation Army, and a number of local church groups.
