Contributed commentary by Krystle Stiles-James, former chair, Cheatham County Libertarian Party:
I am a registered Independent voter. As a voter uncommitted to a candidate based solely on partisan values, I cast my vote based on their vision, history and actions. Sometimes, I don’t vote at all. I admit that in the last major presidential election, I abstained. I didn’t feel qualitatively represented by either of the mainstream candidates. This election, however, is different. Like many others in the “silent majority” (approximately 91,739,344 based on November 2016 general election data from electproject.org) who abstained from voting, I have verified my voter status with GOVOTETN and turned a hard-eyed look not only on national and state candidates but also local candidates.
The Ward 5 City Council election race has three candidates: Melissa Eldridge, Jason Knight and Joey Dasinger.
Jason Knight is not “a voice” pushing his own politics on constituents, he has been “the voice” responding for members of (County Commission) District 18. Knight has provided very clear personal stances on political issues, but his voice as county commissioner has always been reflective of the community. The only issues where he asserts his own opinion in front of his district are on issues concerning education, because he is a hands-on father. I think we would all be hard-pressed to find fault with someone who wants the best opportunities for our children.
Jason Knight also practices inclusiveness. He actively engages Independents in local decisions. We are not a forgotten party, rather we are embraced and offered a seat at the table. If you have felt disenfranchised and unrepresented, he is the candidate who will listen to your concerns and offer equitable solutions. There are many styles of leadership and many pathways to achieving a goal, but if you want a leader who builds bridges in the community by his own example, Jason Knight is your candidate. Many government problems are “solved” by increased taxation and new government agencies. However, Knight has assertively argued in favor of his constituents against these “solutions” in recognition of the burden that is placed on individuals. He does not faint under pressure from opposition.
While I am personally familiar with the “Independent” running against Jason Knight, Knight has earned my support. He did not earn it because he is a respected military leader. He did not earn it because he is experienced in local government. He did not earn it because of his conservative platform. Jason Knight earned my support because he has consistently communicated with me on issues directly affecting my life. He earned my support because he respected me as an individual. Respect that even the opponent identifying with the Libertarian platform running on a campaign of “individuality” never showed me. Don’t give up your voice with a NOTA (none of the above). Don’t let a party label blind you to the misalignment of candidate’s platforms and actions.
Clarksville, if you are an Independent like me, I urge you to cast your Independent vote for Jason Knight, Ward 5 City Council.
