CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Local law enforcement officers and leaders gathered at the Clarksville Police Department Friday morning to honor fallen officers as part of National Police Week.
The memorial began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by CPD Deputy Chief Ty Burdine, and a presentation of colors by CPD and MCSO honor guards. The memorial also featured a performance of the national anthem, some guest remarks and lastly the laying of a wreath. Four flowers were placed in the wreath to represent law enforcement officers who lost their lives in Clarksville-Montgomery County, in Tennessee, across the nation and in the military.
The Clarksville Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Austin Peay State University Police and Fort Campbell Police were all represented at the ceremony. Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts, Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden, and District Attorney General Robert Nash spoke at the event.
Clarksville Police Chief David Crockarell talked about being a member of law enforcement. “I am proud to be a cop. I always have been and I always will be,” said Crockarell.
Crockarell also talked about the incidents such as the COVID pandemic, the George Floyd slaying, and most recently the events in Memphis, how it has become difficult to honor the profession when many communities across the country struggle to do so.
“Our community is unique. It continues to support law enforcement and those who serve in general. We will not take this for granted, and the best way to honor those who have given their lives as law enforcement officers is for our agency to remain legitimate in our authority and remain committed to our canons of ethics,” Crockarell said.
The ceremony ended with a rifle salute and the playing of taps.
