CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW)- The grand jury has indicted an Elkton, Ky. man and charged him with the deaths of a Clarksville couple who were killed in a wreck on Guthrie Highway in September 2019.

Miguel Ruiz Matiaz, 37, is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide by intoxication for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing a wreck on September 30, 2019 that killed Suthun and Kay Subhawong, according to Matiaz’s  July indictment.

More charges are pending.

According to an article by The Leaf-Chronicle, the wreck occurred at about 7:30 p.m. The Subhawongs along with former CMCSS schools director David Baker and his wife, retired teacher Nina Baker, were traveling in the same car on U.S. Highway 79 near Hampton Station Road in Montgomery County when their car was struck from behind.

Suthan Subhawong, 69, sustained fatal injuries in the wreck and died.

Kay Eileen Subhawong, 64, died a week later in the hospital on October 7, 2019.

The wreck left David Baker and his wife, Nina Baker, in critical condition.

He is also charged with resisting arrest on allegations when Trooper Robert Snider tried to detain or arrest him following the wreck.

The Subhawong

According to his obituary, Suthun “Foo” Subhawong, was born in Thailand, and was a chemical engineer at the Clarksville Zinc Plant.

Kay Eileen Subhawong, taught mathematics in the Clarksville Montgomery Co. school system for over 25 years, both at Northeast High School and later Clarksville High School.

Suthun and Kay Subhawong were married for 41 years. They had two sons and three grandchildren.

Matiaz is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges on Monday, Aug. 10 in Judge William Goodman’s court.
