CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Kirkwood Cobras and Rossview Hawks met up at West Creek High School for the Region 7-4A title game on Thursday. The game needed overtime to decide, and Bryce Garnett delivered a three-pointer with a second remaining in a tied contest to give the Cobras the lead, and Kirkwood got one more stop to hold on for a 70-67 win, earning their first region title in program history.

The two teams were stride for stride in the fourth edition of the rivalry matchup this season, but Hawks guard Jiyair Rose was the star of the night. Rose was getting to his spots all night, and hit a three with 14 seconds left to give the Hawks a two-point lead, and what seemed like the win. Rose ended the night with 41 points, a new Rossview record, breaking Johnathon Williams’ record of 36 from 2009.

However, Kirkwood guard Armani Smith would not be denied, driving right to the rack for a layup to tie the ball game up at 63 with six seconds remaining. Smith finsihed the night leading the Cobras with 31. Rossview got a shot off before the buzzer, but couldn’t get it to fall, and we headed to overtime. Yet again in this classic matchup, the two teams were neck and neck until Cobra guard Bryce Garnett hit a three-pointer with a second left, all but icing the contest.

“Tonight was great for Clarksville basketball,” said Cobras head coach John Stigall. “Two teams battling and making big plays on both sides. I’m extremely proud of our players and the way they fought through adversity. It felt like nothing went our way at times, but they never stopped competing. I couldn’t be prouder to be their coach, and I’m proud of our players, our staff, and what this program represents.”

The Hawks got a shot off before the buzzer again, but it couldn’t find the bottom of the net, and the Cobras secured their first-ever region title in a game that will not soon be forgotten in the Clarksville-area basketball history books.

What’s next for Rossview, Kirkwood

Rossview will have another shot to keep its season alive, as it heads to Bartlett to face the Panthers in a sub-state contest.

“I’m so proud of my guys and how they grew into men tonight. No one gave us a shot, but we found a passion and desire to do all of the little things, and we just came up a little short. I thought JiYair Rose‘s effort was legendary. Forty-one points in a region final was as good as I’ve ever seen in Clarksville. Going to Bartlett and playing the No. 9 team in the country is a tall order for anyone, so we’re going to be loose and go down and do everything we can to compete and try to advance.”

As for Kirkwood, they’ll host their first-ever sub-state game against Whitehaven on Monday night. The Cobras have the opportunity to advance to the state tournament for the first time in program history, and to do it, they’ll have to face a team that has already defeated them once this year.
