CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Kirkwood High Cobras took a short road trip down to Rossview High for a muddy and defense-heavy rivalry and region matchup with the Hawks.
Rossview High took an early lead that they held for a long time, but behind a powerful rushing attack in the second half, the Cobras scored 12 unanswered points to beat the Hawks for the first time in school history, 12-3.
Rossview got on the board during their first possession, after a 55-yard rush from Damari Wilson had set them up in the red-zone. Mick Casto then knocked in a 33-yard field goal for the only points of the first half. Both offenses had chances, but neither could find the endzone, and the teams went into the locker room at halftime with Rossview up 3-0.
“We knew they relied on their defense to make plays, and that’s what they did early,” said Kirkwood High head coach Chad Watson. “We weren’t going to put the ball in the air as much, and we have an elite defense too, I think they showed that tonight. We challenged the offensive line at halftime, and they came out and responded.”

The Kirkwood High defense did not allow another score outside of the first drive of the game.
On the offensive end, a methodical 14-play, 77-yard drive, capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by Josiah Claybrooks, who had 26 carries for 165 yards on the night, put the Cobras up 6-3. After a blocked extra point and a couple of punts, Kirkwood High running back punched in another touchdown for the Cobras after a 27-yard touchdown run. The Cobras then were able to pull out a huge region win, 12-3.
“A few plays here and there change the game,” said Rossview High head coach Todd Hood. “We had a few penalties, we didn’t block very well, they did a good job running the ball against us. This season isn’t over. We’ve still got big games, and lots of things can still happen. We just need to get on that bus next week, head to Dickson (County), and take care of business.”
As for Kirkwood, with Dickson County’s loss to Clarksville this week, they now control their own destiny with an eye on the number one overall seed in region 7-6A.
“It’s our biggest win in program history, but we have to focus on Liberty Creek,” Watson told Clarksville Now. “We have to treat next week just like a region game.”
