DOVER, Tenn. (WKRN) — The subject of a Woodlawn manhunt in the fall of 2018 appeared in Stewart County Courthouse Wednesday, July 24. Kirby Wallace plead guilty to multiple crimes, receiving a life sentence.

Teddy and Brenda Smith came home to Wallace burglarizing their home in September, 2018. Upon discovery, Wallace attacked the couple, strangling Brenda Smith and beating Teddy Smith. He then lit the house on fire before fleeing. He remained on the run for 12 days before capture.

It was an emotional day in the courtroom as Wallace was sentenced in front of one of his victims. The 54-year old was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole after pleading guilty to eight charges.

Right before Wallace walked into court, the room became completely silent. As he walked in, some family members commented on his weight, saying he had gained a few pounds, and his garb, referencing his shackles and covered hands.

As the District Attorney read Wallace’s guilty plea, Teddy Smith began loudly sobbing. The DA said it’s unimaginable what Mr. Smith has had to endure.

“Mr. Smith is one of the strongest men I’ve ever met in my entire life. His love for his family and wife is unparalleled. It is heartwrenching. He…he deserves finality and conclusion.”

Wallace spoke only to respond yes sir and no sir in relation to the court proceedings.

The DA said Kirby Wallace will die in prison from his sentence in Stewart County.

Wallace must still be convicted and sentenced in Montgomery County, where he is set to make an appearance on Friday, July 26.
