CLARKSVILLE, TN − Chekhov’s one-act comedies “The Bear” and “The Marriage Proposal” promise a night of uninterrupted comedy. Although traditionally presented on stage back-to-back in two acts, Kenwood has a surprise in store for the audience. Director Dr. Judy Rye explains: “At Kenwood, we are staging the two plays side-by-side, moving back and forth between the city and country in a dual-watching experience titled ‘Surprised by Love.’” Kenwood breaks new ground with this inventive and innovative production that will be presented Thursday and Friday, April 3 and 4, at 6:30 pm, and Sunday, April 6, at 2:30 pm.
Chekhov’s one-act comedies are hilarious and insightful looks at human relationships. “The Marriage Proposal” is set in the country where a nervous bachelor arrives at the home of his neighbor intending to propose to her daughter. However, an argument over land and other trivial matters threatens to derail the marriage proposal. “The Bear” is set in the city where a widow, who has vowed to mourn forever, receives a visit from a merchant who claims that her recently deceased husband owed him a large sum of money that must be paid “today.” She orders him to leave; he determines to stay until the debt is paid. The standoff reveals her high spirits and his tender heart.
Seniors Key’aira Jefferson and Martin Edwards lead the cast of “The Bear.” Freshmen Gabriella Gill and Avian Frizzell lead the cast of “The Marriage Proposal.” Director Rye says, “Having a senior play and a freshman play was not intentional, but it does reflect the strength of the Drama Club at Kenwood.” We can look forward to strong performances and outstanding productions every time the Knights Players take the stage at KHS.
Tickets are $5 on GoFan.com or cash/check at the door. Theatre at KHS is always free for CMCSS students.
