CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Kenwood High girls’ soccer team opened their 2024-25 home slate with a match against the McEwen Warriors on Thursday, Aug. 22. McEwen started the contest fast, and while the Knights applied pressure on their opponents throughout the night, they lost by a score of 3-0. With the loss, Kenwood High falls to 1-1 on the season.

At the start of the game, the Knights were able to control the ball, having most of the time of possession. However, McEwen scored three goals in a ten-minute span midway through the first half, while Kenwood was held scoreless through the first 45 minutes. Kenwood head coach Derek Catanzaro thought the momentum McEwen gained was what led to the loss.

“Overall, we played well, they just got those three goals, and it changed the feel of the game,” Catanzaro told Clarksville Now.

In the second half, Kenwood High put the pressure on the Warriors while on offense, constantly having possession on their end of the field, and firing shots on goal. Sadly, the Knights couldn’t find the back of the net, and despite a second half shutout, Kenwood High fell by a score of 3-0. Catanzaro offered his thoughts on his team’s overall performance after the game.

“We’re improving, there’s no doubt about that,” Catanzaro said. “In the second half we controlled the ball for the majority. Other than those three goals, we just competed out there tonight.”
