CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Northwest High Vikings hosted the Kenwood Knights for a region matchup at Northwest High School on Thursday, Oct. 10. The Knights built an early lead, and despite a second-half comeback scare from Northwest, Kenwood held on to win 27-19.

Kenwood jumped out to an early 14-0 lead behind a strong rushing attack and offensive line, which led to a touchdown from Josiah Brown and Malcolm Calhoun. The Knights held their 14-point lead until the end of the first half.

“They started excellent, I love how we came out,” said Kenwood head coach Jarhett Snead. “The rushing attack got going, and that was good for us.”

In the second half, however, the teams traded punches until the score sat at 27-13 with Kenwood leading the way. This is where things took an interesting turn. With about 20 seconds left in the game, Northwest scored a touchdown and proceeded to recover their onside kick as well for a chance to tie the game.

When the Vikings attempted one last heave to the endzone, their pass fell incomplete and Northwest’s comeback fell just short as they lost the game 27-19.

Northwest head coach Mark Hall loved the fight his kids showed to come back in an intense game and atmosphere.

“I love playing games like that when it’s so close and there’s stakes on the line,” Hall told Clarksville Now. “Our guys came through, made some great plays, and never gave up, and I’m proud of them. We just ended up on the wrong side of it.”

As for Kenwood, they’re now on a two-game winning streak after starting the season with 0-5. Snead believes the key to keeping the momentum going is to control their own game.

“We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot,” said Snead. “We had a lot of penalties that put us back, and if we learn how to finish, we’re going to be a pretty good ball club. Let’s see what happens next week.”
