CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Kenwood Knights traveled to West Creek High School for the 17th edition of the “Battle of the Mill” rivalry game with the Coyotes on Friday. A defensive struggle saw the Knights pull away late for an 11-0 victory, evening their record at 2-2 on the year.

There wasn’t much scoring to speak of in the first half. A run-heavy attack from both sides saw lots of physical play, but neither team was able to break through. Kenwood finally was able to get on the board midway through the second quarter with a Jerome Ashbury field goal, but that was all the scoring for the first 24 minutes.

Both teams remained silent in the third quarter as well, then finally, with over two minutes left in the contest, senior Kenwood running back Vandarious Hammonds found paydirt to give the Knights a 9-0 lead and effectively ice the contest.

“It was a sloppy game, we left a lot of stuff on the field,” said Kenwood head coach Jarhett Snead. “We have to make sure we execute better. We were down a few key players, but we can’t make excuses. Special teams and defense really pulled through for us tonight; we don’t win this game without those two units.

A fumbled snap for West Creek caused a safety as time ran out, and the Knights won back the “Battle of the Mill” trophy after a three-year losing streak. For the Coyotes, it’s the third time in four weeks they’ve been shut out, and West Creek is searching for answers after an 0-4 start.

“It was a good game, we just made too many mistakes to win this game,” said West Creek head coach Micheal Booker. “Down the stretch, they just played like the better team. Right now, we haven’t taken advantage of opportunities to score. Everybody hates losing, but I asked the kids to keep their heads up and get ready for next week.”

As for Kenwood, it’s a bounce-back in-city win on the road, all things that can propel a program forward, and a win that can be a huge momentum booster. With a matchup with state powerhouse Pearl-Cohn next week, they’re going to need that momentum facing the Firebirds.

“We’re back at .500, and it’s been a while since we’ve been there,” said Snead. “It feels good to be here, but we need to keep improving, keep getting better, and that’s all we can do each week.”
