CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), more pets go missing on the Fourth and Fifth of July than any other time of the year. What is a great time for people, with barbecues, pool parties and fireworks, can often be stressful for our four-legged friends.

Here are some tips for keeping your pets safe and secure at home this Fourth of July weekend:

Preparation is key

  • Make sure your cat and/or dog is properly identifiable. Check to make sure their tags are up to date. Speak with you veterinarian about the possibility of microchipping, a quick, simple procedure that ensures your pet can be traced back to you.
  • Have a current photo of your pet ready to go, just in case.
  • If at all possible, bring your pets indoors while shooting fireworks.
  • If pets cannot be inside, take steps to ensure they are secure in your yard. Check fences and railings to make sure your dog or cat is not encouraged to roam to far.
  • Some particularly anxious pets may benefit from medication to calm them down. Speak with your veterinarian if you feel like this may be an option.

During the celebration

  • Leave pets at home. Loud fireworks and unfamiliar spaces can be very stressful for a pet, leading to an increased risk that they might run off or get spooked.
  • Ask your guests to help keep an eye your pet and to let you know if they seem to be having a hard time. Place notes near doors and gates so guests know not to let the dog or cat out.
  • Keep sparklers, kabobs, charcoal, etc away from pets.
  • Do not leave your pets in a car!

After the party

  • Check your yard for fireworks debris that a pet might be tempted to eat. Even if you did not shoot fireworks, neighboring debris might find its way into your yard.
  • If you know there are other dogs in your neighborhood who are prone to wander, check under porches and in buildings to see if you have a guest.
